Hold and Spin Advantage Play Slot Machines

Buffalo Link launched in March 2021 on Aristocrat's MarsX Portrait cabinet, and it stands apart from every other Buffalo title because it's the first to graft the Lightning Link Hold & Spin mechanic onto the classic Buffalo theme. It's a 5-reel, 4-row video slot with 1,024 ways to win, available in five denominations from one to five cents per credit, with bets running from 100 to 1,000 credits — so $1.00 to $50.00 a spin depending on how you set it up.

The base game runs the familiar Buffalo cast: buffalo, eagle, wolf, mountain lion, and deer paying high; royals paying low. The buffalo body symbol is the highest payer at 300x bet for five-of-a-kind, and the free games introduce 2x and 3x wild multipliers on reel 5 that can stack across multiple ways. Two parallel bonus features run alongside each other. Landing 8 or more buffalo body symbols on a paid spin triggers Hold & Spin: the buffalos lock in place, you get three respins, and any new buffalo body resets the counter back to three. Each locked buffalo carries either a cash-on-reel value (up to 200x your bet) or one of the four jackpot levels — Mini, Minor, Major, or Grand. Filling the entire 4x5 board with buffalo bodies awards the Grand outright, which caps at $20,000 with a $10,000 reset.

Cash Falls is a Light & Wonder slot family — produced through the Firebird Studios subsidiary, formerly Scientific Games — with multiple themed variants running on the same engine. Versions in market include Huo Zhu, Outback Fortune, Pirate's Trove, Island Bounty, Glacier Gold, and others. The base game uses a distinctive 4-4-6-6-8 reel layout that gives roughly 4,500 to 4,600 ways to win depending on the variant, with all bets fixed at 50 credits per spin in an all-ways-pays format.

The headline mechanic is the Cash Falls feature itself. Bonus symbols carrying multiplier values (up to 100x bet) or one of four fixed jackpot prizes can land on any reel during base play. Once a bonus symbol lands, it sticks to that reel for the next three spins. If another bonus symbol lands on the same reel during that window, the spin counter resets and both symbols continue to hold. The right-hand reels (6 and 8 positions tall) get the most bonus-symbol density because of the expanding shape.

Freedom Luck is an Aristocrat slot themed around American patriotism — flags, eagles, stars-and-stripes iconography across the cabinet art. The base game runs on a 5-reel video format with multiple paylines and player-selectable denominations. Public AP-community documentation on this title is thin compared to flagship Aristocrat AP-relevant titles like Buffalo Link or the Cash Cano family.

The defining mechanic in the AP-relevant version of the title is a hold-and-spin bonus event with persistent-state elements. Hold-and-spin patterns across the Aristocrat portfolio (Lightning Link, Dragon Link, Buffalo Link, Mighty Cash Unlimited) tend to follow a consistent template: trigger on collected scatter symbols, three-spin reset structure during the feature, and progressive jackpot tiers awarded for filling the grid.

Lucky Coin Link is an IGT multi-level progressive video slot released in 2022 on the PeakSlant49 and CrystalCurve cabinets, available in two themes — Asian Dreaming and Atlantica — sharing the same engine. The base game runs on a 5x4 reel matrix with 10, 20, 30, or 40 selectable paylines, denominations from $0.01 to $1.00, and a max bet of 880 credits. The hit frequency runs around 40% with a theoretical hold band of 4-14% depending on configuration.

The defining mechanic borrows from IGT's earlier Coin O' Mania engine: a coin-collection row at the bottom of the reel set captures coin symbols as they land. When coins land in any reel position above the collection row, they fall into the row's locked positions. Once five coins lock in the collection row, the respin feature triggers — and on the trigger, the reel set expands from 5x4 to 5x6, dramatically increasing the win surface area for the respin.

Orb Lock Dragon is an Everi persistent-state slot with an Asian theme, released on the Empire Flex cabinet — a 49-inch flexed display with 4K content, integrated light bars, and an enhanced glass button deck. The base game runs as a 5-reel video slot, with the persistent state living above the reels in a ring-collection meter and an orb collector that drives the bonus pathway.

The defining base-game mechanic is the persistent ring collection. Orb symbols land on the reels and bank as rings above their corresponding reel. The rings remain locked in place until a dragon symbol lands on reel 5, at which point all banked rings turn wild for the spin. What differentiates Orb Lock Dragon from similar persistent-ring titles like Scarab and Diamond Mania is the multiplier overlay: if an orb lands on a position that already has a ring, the ring's multiplier increases by one — up to a maximum of 5x — stacking value on the existing ring instead of just adding new ones.

Rich Little Sheep is Light & Wonder's newest entry in the Rich Little family alongside Rich Little Piggies and Rich Little Hens. It comes in two themes, On the Lamb and Wool Street Riches, and runs 5 reels and 25 lines with a 750-credit max bet on the Cosmic cabinet.

It is the first game in the series to use a hold and spin feature. Colored coins land during the base game and either upgrade one of the three sheep or trigger the hold and spin with one, two or all three sheep active. Combining all three sheep creates a mega feature with head-start spins, extra rows and a jackpot chase.
